Civil unrest broke out upon the announcement of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King on April 4th, 1968.
Lyndon Johnson called sent 5000 National Guardsmen in with 'shoot to kill' orders for arsonists and 'shoot to maim' orders for looters.
Some stores with the spray painted words 'Soul Brother' were passed over by looters and arsonists who mostly destroyed their own West Side neighborhood.
